Why Do They Do That?Developmental Trauma

Did you know? Domestic violence during a pregnancy, prenatal drug and alcohol exposure, significant medical intervention at an early age, removal from bio home, neglect, physical abuse or sexual abuse prior to development of explicit memory (usually prior to age 3) can result in Developmental Trauma Disorder? Imagine being subjected to these things as an adolescent to adult. The anxiety, fear, reactivity, depression, insecurities, anger, disturbing recollections, nightmares... you will have context, memories... you get the idea that what you're experiencing this because of what happened to you. Now, what about when you experience all those symptoms that result in secondary symptoms (AKA "behaviors") and have NO frame of reference for what you're experiencing? You're seen as a bad kid by teachers, even parents, you're punished, you are beyond confused. Imagine trying to cope with all that without intervention. Maybe drug use? Indiscriminate attachment leading to increased sexual activity? This is why its so damaging and counterproductive to insult, judge and look down on those struggling with addiction or sexual risk taking. WE HAVE NO IDEA what others have been through. All humans must be met with some level of empathy. A lot of these children and adults "acting out" are simply trying to overcome a complex array of thoughts and feelings they have no context or understanding of.
